Britannica Online subscribers are invited to participate in online training sessions. This is a complimentary service provided to see what's new with Britannica Online and learn different ways to use it in your school or library! Facts On File Adds New, Revised Content to Ferguson’s Career Guidance Center

Facts On File is pleased to provide details of the latest update to Ferguson's Career Guidance Center. The update includes new and revised information on a variety of careers, from library and information science to transportation to music and publishing, which will prove invaluable to job seekers of all ages.

New Entries on Library and Information Science Careers
Ferguson's Career Guidance Center now includes new information on careers in library and information science. Many users are unaware of the broad range of activities that takes place behind the average library's doors, including exhibitions, readings by authors, conferences of scholars and more. WorldCat Collection Analysis Quarterly Update

OCLC is happy to announce that the WorldCat Collection Analysis Quarterly Update (through December 2009) has been released. The WorldCat "snapshot" was taken on December 28, 2009.

The following updates were made with this install:

  • The date range of 2000-2004 has been added to the date ranges that are broken out in 10 year intervals, and 2010 has been added.
  • Based on librarian feedback and input, any new comparisons created will be FRBRized. This default setting is set as "Apply FRBR Algorithm".
    • Any pre-existing peer comparisons won’t have had FRBR applied. If you would like an old comparison to run with the FRBR algorithm, please delete the old one and re-request it using the FRBR option.
  • The interdisciplinary studies link has been added to the Support and Training page under Best Practices. Here you will find step-by-step instructions and screen shots for creating your interdisciplinary studies analysis.

Registration Now Open for Digital Preservation for Digital Collaboratives

BCR, LYRASIS and OCLC are proud to present a new workshop, Digital Preservation for Digital Collaboratives, designed to help digital collaboratives with existing digital collections develop and implement a long-term preservation option.

The workshop, designed for multiple representatives from a collaborative, will provide the information and tools the collaborative needs to develop a long-term preservation plan that will work for its unique collections and organizations.

April 13, 14 and 16 from 1-3 pm ET: Three webinars will address the following topics:

  • Introduction to the Digital Preservation Landscape
  • Digital Preservation Standards
  • Sustaining the Digital Investment: Developing a Digital Preservation Program
  • Developing Preservation Policies for Collaboratives

April 28-29 at LYRASIS – Philadelphia:  Two full-day sessions will address the following topics:

  • Elements of TRAC
  • Using TRAC in Planning and Assessment
  • Technology and Technical Infrastructure

Faculty and program staff will host monthly follow-up activities, including webinars, to assist collaboratives in completing their preservation plans.

The workshop will be taught by a faculty of digital preservation experts:

BCR Offers Online Workshops to Help Libraries and Archives Meet Today's Digital Challenges

Does your library or organization have plans to start a digitization program? It should. Digitizing collections and making them available on the web is a great way to reach out to more people and meet the expectations of users.

Want to know more about digital capture, including scanning techniques and digital capture equipment? Check out Picture This! Understanding Digital Image Capture.

Perhaps you already have your digital images, but want to know how to describe them so that patrons can find them on your website. For the metadata newbie, consider taking our Introduction to Metadata for the Digital Environment and learn about what metadata is and what it can do for your digital resources.

Maybe your organization has already decided to use Dublin Core to describe its digital collections. Sign up for our Introduction to Dublin Core workshop and get hands-on practice with Dublin Core metadata elements. You will have an opportunity to work with your own digital resources or with provided examples.

Has your library or organization already started digitizing and making digital resources available on the web? How are you going to let people know about your wonderful new digital program? Check out Generation Archives 2.0: Tools for Promoting Your Archives on the Web. Although the workshop is geared towards archives and archivists, any organization with digital collections will want to take this class to learn about using Web 2.0 to reach their patrons.
